The Sacred Hour:  A Workshop on Spiritually Integrated Psychotherapy

This workshop is designed to provide practitioners and educators with a framework for understandingand addressing spirituality in psychotherapy. The first section will provide a rationale for spiritually integrated psychotherapy. The second section will offer a theoretical and conceptual framework for understanding spirituality. The third section will present a multi-level model of spiritual assessment that ranges from initial questions to more intensive assessments of various domains of religion and spirituality. The final section will illustrate some of the ways practitioners can draw upon spiritual resources to facilitate clients’ health and well-being.  Kenneth Pargament, Ph.D. is professor of clinical psychology at Bowling Green State University. He is the author of The Psychology of Religion and Coping: Theory, Research, Practice (Guilford Press, 1997) and of Spiritually Integrated Psychotherapy: Understanding and Addressing the Sacred (Guilford Press, 2007). He is co-editor of Forgiveness: Theory, Research, Practice (Guilford Press, 2000). Dr. Pargament is world-renowned for his work on the role of religion and spirituality in coping with trauma and stress and has consulted with the World Health Organization and the National Institutes of Health. His awards include the Virginia Staudt Sexton Mentoring Award from the American Psychological Association and the William James Award for outstanding research in the psychology of religion from Division 36 of the American Psychological Association.

ANNOUNCEMENT:


Spiritual and Psychological Aspects of Illness: Dealing with Sickness, Loss, Dying and Death, edited by Beverly A. Musgrave and Neil McGettiga from Paulist Press, will be available in June of 2010. This book includes chapters by Pamela Cooper White, John Shea, Mary Ragan, Paul Metzler and Margaret Kornfeld among others.
